Choosing Your Starter

The first major decision in Pokémon Fire Red is choosing your starter Pokémon. The three options are Bulbasaur (Grass), Charmander (Fire), and Squirtle (Water). Each has its strengths and weaknesses throughout the game.

Bulbasaur is the easiest starter for beginners. It has a type advantage against the first three gyms (Rock, Water, Electric), making the early game much smoother. Bulbasaur evolves into Ivysaur at level 16 and Venusaur at level 32.

Charmander is the hardest starter to use in the early game, as it is weak to the first two gyms. However, Charmander becomes incredibly powerful once it evolves into Charizard at level 36. Charizard's Fire/Flying typing gives it immunity to Ground moves and resistance to Fighting and Fire.

Squirtle is a balanced choice that works well throughout the game. It has an advantage against the first gym (Rock) and can learn Ice moves to handle Grass and Dragon types. Squirtle evolves into Wartortle at level 16 and Blastoise at level 36.

Main Story Walkthrough

The main story of Pokémon Fire Red follows the classic Kanto journey. Here is a brief overview of the key story beats:

  1. Pallet Town: Choose your starter and receive your Pokédex from Professor Oak.
  2. Viridian City: Buy Poké Balls and start catching Pokémon.
  3. Pewter City: Challenge Brock, the Rock-type gym leader.
  4. Cerulean City: Challenge Misty, the Water-type gym leader.
  5. Vermilion City: Challenge Lt. Surge, the Electric-type gym leader.
  6. Celadon City: Challenge Erika, the Grass-type gym leader.
  7. Saffron City: Defeat Team Rocket at Silph Co.
  8. Fuchsia City: Challenge Koga, the Poison-type gym leader.
  9. Cinnabar Island: Challenge Blaine, the Fire-type gym leader.
  10. Viridian City: Challenge Giovanni, the Ground-type gym leader.
  11. Indigo Plateau: Challenge the Elite Four and the Champion.

Gym Leaders Guide

Each gym leader in Fire Red specializes in a specific type. Here is a guide to defeating each one:

Brock (Rock) - Pewter City

Brock uses Geodude (Lv. 12) and Onix (Lv. 14). Water and Grass moves are super effective. If you chose Squirtle or Bulbasaur, this gym is easy. If you chose Charmander, catch a Mankey or Nidoran for Fighting moves.

Misty (Water) - Cerulean City

Misty uses Staryu (Lv. 18) and Starmie (Lv. 21). Electric and Grass moves are super effective. Catch a Pikachu in Viridian Forest or an Oddish/Bellsprout on Route 24.

Lt. Surge (Electric) - Vermilion City

Lt. Surge uses Voltorb (Lv. 21), Pikachu (Lv. 18), and Raichu (Lv. 24). Ground moves are super effective and Electric moves have no effect on Ground types. Diglett's Cave is right next to Vermilion City — catch a Diglett.

Best Team for Fire Red

A well-balanced team for Pokémon Fire Red should cover as many types as possible. Here is a recommended team:

  • Venusaur/Charizard/Blastoise: Your starter, covering Grass, Fire, or Water.
  • Pikachu/Raichu: Electric type for Water and Flying types.
  • Dugtrio: Ground type for Electric, Fire, and Poison types.
  • Snorlax: Normal type with incredible bulk and Attack.
  • Lapras: Water/Ice type for Dragon and Grass types.
  • Alakazam/Gengar: Psychic or Ghost type for Fighting and Poison types.

Hidden Items and Secrets

Pokémon Fire Red is full of hidden items and secrets. Here are some of the most important ones:

  • Hidden Rare Candy: Check the backyard of houses in Cerulean City.
  • PP Up: Hidden on Route 24, near the top of the screen.
  • Leftovers: Found under the cycling road, accessible with Surf.
  • Mach Bike: Essential for reaching certain areas quickly.
  • Old Rod, Good Rod, Super Rod: Each rod catches different Pokémon. The Super Rod is the most useful.

Post-Game Content

After becoming the Champion, Fire Red introduces the Sevii Islands, a post-game area with new Pokémon, items, and challenges. The Sevii Islands are accessible via the ferry in Vermilion City.

Key post-game activities include catching the Legendary Birds (Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres), completing the Pokédex, and rematching the Elite Four with stronger teams. The Sevii Islands also feature new areas like the Altering Cave and the Tanoby Ruins, which contain Unown.
