Lucario Overview

Lucario is a Fighting/Steel type Pokémon introduced in Generation 4 (Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum). It evolves from Riolu when leveled up with high friendship during the day. Lucario is known as the Aura Pokémon, with the ability to sense and manipulate aura energy.

Lucario's Fighting/Steel typing is unique and powerful, giving it 9 resistances, 1 immunity (Poison), and only 3 weaknesses (Fire, Fighting, Ground). This typing makes Lucario a versatile Pokémon that can handle many different threats.

Base Stats and Typing

Lucario has well-balanced stats that allow it to function as both a physical and special attacker:

  • HP: 70
  • Attack: 110
  • Defense: 70
  • Special Attack: 115
  • Special Defense: 70
  • Speed: 90
  • Total: 525

Lucario's Attack (110) and Special Attack (115) are nearly equal, making it an excellent mixed attacker. Its Speed of 90 is decent but not outstanding, meaning Lucario can be outsped by many faster Pokémon. Its defensive stats are modest, so Lucario should focus on dealing damage rather than taking hits.

Best Moves and Movesets

Lucario has access to an incredibly diverse movepool, covering Fighting, Steel, Psychic, Ice, Dark, Dragon, and more. Here are the best movesets:

Physical Attacker Set

  • Close Combat (Fighting STAB, 120 BP)
  • Meteor Mash or Bullet Punch (Steel STAB, priority)
  • Crunch or Earthquake (coverage)
  • Swords Dance (Attack boost)

Special Attacker Set

  • Aura Sphere (Fighting STAB, never misses)
  • Flash Cannon (Steel STAB)
  • Shadow Ball or Dark Pulse (coverage)
  • Nasty Plot (Special Attack boost)

Priority Attacker Set

  • Bullet Punch (Steel priority)
  • Extreme Speed (Normal priority)
  • Close Combat (Fighting STAB)
  • Swords Dance (Attack boost)

Competitive Builds

Lucario is classified in the RU (Rarely Used) tier in Smogon, meaning it is viable but not top-tier. However, with the right build, Lucario can be a devastating sweeper.

Swords Dance Sweeper

Use Swords Dance to boost Attack, then sweep with Close Combat and Bullet Punch. The priority from Bullet Punch helps Lucario deal with faster threats. This set works best with a Focus Sash to guarantee survival.

Nasty Plot Sweeper

Use Nasty Plot to boost Special Attack, then sweep with Aura Sphere and Flash Cannon. This set is harder to counter because many opponents expect a physical Lucario. Shadow Ball provides coverage against Ghost and Psychic types.

How to Get Lucario

Lucario is obtained by evolving Riolu, which is available in most Pokémon games:

Generation 4 (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum)

Receive a Riolu egg from Riley on Iron Island after helping him through the cave. Riolu hatches at level 1 and evolves into Lucario with high friendship during the day.

Generation 5 (Black, White, Black 2, White 2)

Wild Riolu can be found in Challenger's Cave in Black 2 and White 2. In Black and White, Riolu is available through the Dream World.

Generation 6 (X, Y, ORAS)

Wild Riolu can be found on Route 22 in X and Y. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Riolu is obtained through the Poké Radar.

Generation 7 (Sun, Moon, USUM)

Wild Riolu can be found on Poni Island. Use the Poké Pelago to raise friendship quickly.

Generation 8 (Sword, Shield)

Wild Riolu can be found in the Giant's Cap area of the Wild Area during snowstorms.

Generation 9 (Scarlet, Violet)

Wild Riolu can be found in the caves of Paldea. Use picnics to raise friendship quickly.

Mega Lucario

Mega Lucario is one of the most powerful Mega Evolutions in the game. When Mega Evolved using the Lucarionite, Lucario gains the Adaptability ability, which boosts STAB moves from 1.5x to 2x damage.

Mega Lucario's stats increase significantly:

  • Attack: 145 (up from 110)
  • Special Attack: 140 (up from 115)
  • Speed: 112 (up from 90)
  • Total: 625

With Adaptability, Mega Lucario's Close Combat deals 240 base power (120 x 2), and its Aura Sphere deals 160 base power (80 x 2). This makes Mega Lucario one of the hardest-hitting Pokémon in the game. However, its defensive stats remain low, so it should be used as a hit-and-run attacker.
